OUR 2010 WORKSHOP SERIES

Counseling & Training Services is pleased to announce this workshop series.  These topics are designed to meet your CE needs and to stimulate, motivate, and provide you with the tools for professional success. All Workshops will be held at 3039 Briarcliff Rd., Atlanta, Ga. 30329 (see below for directions). Lunch will be provided unless otherwise specified.

All topics have been approved for Social Workers and Professional Counselors!

WORKSHOPS

1.  Did You See How She Treated Me?  The Role of Disrespect, Rudeness, and Incivility in the Workplace: June 18, 2010 9am to 4pm.  Our workplace, like every other place in our culture, can be fraught with negativity, incivility, rudeness, and disruptive behavior.   Even though these behaviors have become hot topics on the evening news, our tendency is to ignore or tolerate them  whether with clients or colleagues.  Discussions will include how we are personally effected and the most productive and  appropriate ways to deal with these destructive behaviors. 6 core hours $95 ($105 after 6/3/10) Jan Luke, MBA, MHA and Nancy Hickman, LCSW.

2.  The Ethics of Conflict of InterestJune 25, 2010 (NEW DATE) and September  24, 2010, 9am to 3pm. The news is fraught with issues of conflict of interest.  Psychiatrists are being accused of having conflicts with ties to the drug companies and performing research.  In this workshop we will talk about the implications of these accusations and how it impacts our clients.  Discussions will also include the nature of the pharmaceutical industry which causes the conflict of interest to be more salient.  Also included will be the ethics of the DSM panel having ties to the pharmaceutical industry-does it render diagnosing unethical?  The issue of recommending medications in light of psychiatrists receiving payments (whether in goods or money) from the pharmaceutical industry will be ethically explored.  We will also discuss potential conflicts of interests which we may face. 5 ethics hours, $95 ($105 after 6/10/10 and 9/9/10) Nancy Hickman, LCSW

3.  Forgotten Children:  Lost but still at home.    June 4, 2010, 9am to 4pm.  Many children/adolescents become lost because of their home situation and in this workshop we will talk about those kids.  One situation which will be discussed is kids who have a sibling or parent with a mental or physical disability and how their emotional needs have to “take a back seat”.  We will also discuss the impact of kids questioning their sexual orientation, and the effects of  adoption of a sibling.  Consideration will be given to assisting these kids with their struggle and, when appropriate, helping their parents deal with the difficult tasks of parenting.  6 core hours, $95 ($105 after 5/20/10), Alison Ratner LCSW and Nancy Hickman, LCSW

4.  Dealing with Test Anxiety and the Licensure ExamMarch 26, 2010, 9am to 4pm.  Have you taken a licensure exam and failed?  Do you dread taking it again?  OR  Do you get anxious when taking tests and are worried you won’t pass the licensure exam?  This workshop is for you!  The purpose of this workshop is to offer you tools that will assist you in dealing with your anxiety, using practice exam qustions.  This presentation will also offer the opportunity to network with other like-minded professionals  with the possibility of forming an effective study group.  Jackie Pray, Ph.D., LCSW and Nancy Hickman, LCSW.  A joint venture with Social Work Unlimited. 6 core hours, $145 ($155 after 3/11)

5.  The Power of Questions, Stories and Feedback:  Coaching Tools for Successful Clinical and Administrative Supervision. April 9 and July 16, 2010. 9am to 4pm. When the employees/supervisees are functioning at their best, everyone wins!  And when managers and clinical supervisors sharpen their skills, the results are positive client outcomes, and enthusiastic and well performing team members/supervisees  This topic provides three key techniques and approaches (questions, stories and feedback) for fostering positive performance as well as personal and professional success.  The workshop will include opportunities to practice the techniques and develop an action plan. Whether you are an administrative manager, clinical supervisor or both.  This workshop will help you increase your positive outcomes and decrease your stress. 6 core hours, $95 ($105 after 3/25 and 7/1/10) Jan Luke, MBA, MHA and Nancy Hickman, LCSW

6.  Healing with Puppets: April 23 and July 30, 2010 9am to 12:15pm. This fun workshop is such a great way to get CEUs!  We will actually see a puppet show and talk about how children through adults can use puppets to heal both physical and emotional wounds.  $55 ($65 after 4/8 and 7/15/10) 3 core hours, Nell Moeling, LMSW and Nancy Hickman, LCSW   LUNCH WILL NOT BE PROVIDED.

7.  Could this be Autism?  What Now?  How to Recognize an Autism Spectrusm Disorder and What to do Next. May 7 and August 27, 2010. 9am to 4pm. Parent-report prevalence rates of Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) is 1 in every 91 American children and higher with boys at 1 in 58.  Every type of health and education professional is likely to encounter an increasing number of children that meets the criteria for ASD.  This workshop will explore diagnostic criteria using real-world examples of behaviors and symptoms and will expound upon established modalities of treatment. Upon completion, attendees will be able to conduct an autism pre-screening and will know how to refer to appropriate specialists for assessment and treatment of ASD.  The attendee will possess a knowledge of the prevalent modalities of treatment for ASD Presenter is a licensed counselor as well as the parent of a child diagnosed with an ASD. 6 core hours, $95($105 after 5/22 and 8/13/10), Jodi Carlton, LPC

8.  Dealing with Divorce:  Helping Families CopeMay 21 and September 10, 2010, 9am to 4pm. Estimates for first time marriages ending in divorce ranges from 40 to 50% and increase 10% respectively for second and third marriages.  Given this high rate, most of us see clients who are dealing with the effects of a divorce and many of us may even have personal experience with divorce.  If these scenarios are true, this workshop is for you!  We will include a broad view of the effects of divorce on both adults and children.  The issue of parental alienation will be discussed along with the  effects on parents and children.   The impact of different developmental stages of both parents and children will  be examined and programs will be identified and effective treatment modalities will be discussed.  6 core hours, $95 ($105 after 5/6 and 8/26/10), Nancy Hickman, LCSW

From GA-400 North
Take GA-400 S. Pass the toll. Take the Sidney Marcus Blvd exit, exit number 1 towards Piedmont Rd/Lenox Rd and turn left at the end of the ramp.   Make a second left onto Buford Hwy NE/Buford Highway connector NE/GA-13 N. Turn right onto Lenox Rd NE. Lenox Rd NE becomes Cheshire Bridge Rd NE. Turn left to take the I-85 North ramp towards Greenville. Merge onto I-85 N/GA-403 N. Take the Clairmont Rd NE/US-23/GA-155 exit. Make a right at the first light. Make a right onto Briarcliff Rd NE.

After you make the turn onto Briarcliff, you will pass a driveway to a grocery store on your left.  After the grocery store, on your left you will see a black iron fence at the end of the fence will be a second driveway and this is where you want to turn left.  You will know that you have turned into the correct driveway if you see a large iron gateway and in the distance,  a awning over a door. You will see a parking lot on your left, you can park your car in the first two levels and come in the door with the awning over it.  The room where we are meeting is just down the hallway-follow the signs.  Overflow parking is on the other side of the church.  Don’t attempt to come in another door and find the workshops as no one will be there to direct you.

From I-85/75N  From the South
Take I-85/75 N through downtown. Continue to keep straight on I-85 once the two interstates split. Take the Clairmont Rd NE/US-23/GA-155 exit. Make a right at the first light. Make a right onto Briarcliff Rd NE.  See above second paragraph for further directions.

From I-85S  From the North
Take I-85 S. Pass over I-285. Take the Clairmont Rd NE/US-23/GA-155 exit. Make a left at the first light onto Clairmont Rd. Make a right onto Briarcliff Rd NE. See above second paragraph for further directions.
